Fringe festivals trace back to 1947, when a group of Scottish theatre rebels crashed the Edinburgh International Festival by performing on its “fringe.” Hamilton’s version keeps that spirit of defiant, unfiltered creativity alive through a strict set of rules borrowed from the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals: shows are picked entirely by lottery (no artistic gatekeeping), and 100% of every ticket price goes directly to the artist performing it.

🎤 Fringe Boulevard
King William St at James St N becomes a pedestrian-only hub of music, dance, drag, film, painting, and performance every night of the festival — all free. Look for local artisan Marketplace tents on Saturdays.

An outdoor marketplace featuring Indigenous artists, makers, and vendors from in and around Hamilton.

A market spotlighting young artisans and entrepreneurs ages 16 and under.

Hamilton Fringe takes place across 16+ venues throughout downtown Hamilton, centred around Fringe Boulevard at King William Street and James Street North. Venues include Theatre Aquarius, Mills Hardware, Players’ Guild, The Westdale, The Staircase, Hamilton Theatre Inc., The Gasworks, Centre for the Talking Arts, and Ringside — all walkable from the downtown core. 💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
💳 No cash at the door. From July 16–26, cash sales are only available in advance at the incite Fringe Info Hub on Fringe Boulevard. At the venues themselves, it’s debit or credit card only.
🎫 Don’t forget your Button. Everyone 12+ needs a $5 Fringe Benefits Button to get into ticketed indoor shows, on top of your ticket. It’s a one-time purchase for the whole festival — and it unlocks discounts at partner businesses around town.
⏰ Shows start on time. Not every venue can accommodate late arrivals. Plan to check in about 10 minutes before showtime, just in case.
💰 All sales are final. There are no refunds. Exchanges for a different performance of the same show are possible with at least 48 hours’ notice, for a small per-ticket fee.
🎲 Take a chance on something unfamiliar. With this many shows, word-of-mouth and a willingness to gamble on an unknown title are often the best way to find the festival’s hidden gems.
