The region at a glance

Stretching from the Kawartha Lakes down to the St. Lawrence, this region blends easygoing lake-town summers with a genuinely strong festival calendar. Peterborough anchors the west with Musicfest, one of the longest-running free-admission concert series in the country, drawing big names to Little Lake all summer. To the east, Kingston balances history with fun — its Buskers Rendezvous fills the waterfront with street performers, and the Limestone City Blues Festival turns downtown into an open-air stage.

In between and beyond, the region leans into food, wine and heritage. Prince Edward County has become one of Ontario’s marquee wine and culinary destinations, Perth pairs the by-donation Stewart Park Festival with a much-loved Garlic Festival, and waterfront towns like Cobourg and Belleville throw big lakeside celebrations. VIA Rail’s corridor makes the St. Lawrence cities easy, though the County and the Kawarthas reward a car.

Kawarthas & Eastern Ontario festival FAQ

What are the biggest festivals in the Kawarthas and Eastern Ontario?
The region’s marquee events include Peterborough Musicfest, one of Canada’s longest-running free-admission concert series; Kingston’s Buskers Rendezvous and Limestone City Blues Festival; and the Perth pair — the by-donation Stewart Park Festival and the Perth Garlic Festival. Prince Edward County anchors the region’s wine and food scene.
When is festival season in Eastern Ontario?
Summer — roughly June through August — is the busiest, with free concert series, buskers and waterfront festivals across the region. Fall shifts to harvest and wine events in Prince Edward County and country fairs, and a few communities run winter carnivals.
Are there free festivals in the region?
Yes. Peterborough Musicfest is one of the longest-running free-admission festivals in Canada, Perth’s Stewart Park Festival is by donation with no ticket required, and the Kingston Buskers Rendezvous and many waterfront festivals are free to attend.
Is Prince Edward County good for food and wine festivals?
Very much so. The County is one of Ontario’s leading wine and culinary destinations, with winery events, harvest celebrations and culinary weekends running through the year, especially in late summer and fall.
Can I get around without a car?
VIA Rail’s main corridor serves Kingston, Belleville, Cobourg, Brockville and Cornwall, so those city-centre festivals are reachable by train. But Peterborough, the Kawartha Lakes, Prince Edward County and Perth are car-dependent.
