The region at a glance

Ottawa may be the only place in Ontario where festival season never really stops. In the depths of February, Winterlude turns the Rideau Canal into the world’s largest skating rink and fills the city with ice sculptures. Come May, the Canadian Tulip Festival paints the capital in a million blooms — a living thank-you from the Netherlands dating back to the Second World War. Summer belongs to music: RBC Ottawa Bluesfest is one of the country’s biggest festivals, joined by the Jazz Festival, Escapade and the enormous Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill.

Beyond the downtown core, the capital region keeps its own traditions. The Ottawa Valley towns host classic agricultural fairs like the Carp Fair, Almonte draws crowds to its beloved international puppet festival, and neighbourhood festivals fill Kanata, Orleans and the Glebe. With O-Train light rail and OC Transpo covering the core, the city’s marquee events are among the easiest in Ontario to reach.
