The region at a glance

Southwestern Ontario spreads from London out to the Windsor border and up both Great Lakes shorelines, and its festival calendar is just as wide-ranging. Stratford is the cultural jewel — the Stratford Festival draws theatre lovers from around the world for a season that runs spring right through the fall. London is the region’s live-music hub, home to the free world-music powerhouse Sunfest and a ribfest routinely ranked among the largest in North America.

Beyond the cities, the region leans into food and heritage. Goderich hosts the Celtic Roots Festival on the shore of Lake Huron, Leamington throws a tomato festival worthy of its “Tomato Capital” title, Windsor celebrates its border-city diversity with buskers and multicultural events, and lake towns like Bayfield, Port Stanley and Grand Bend fill their summers with markets and community festivals.

Southwestern Ontario festival FAQ

What are the biggest festivals in Southwestern Ontario?
The region’s marquee events include the world-renowned Stratford Festival; London’s Sunfest, one of Canada’s largest free world-music and jazz festivals; the London Ribfest & Craft Beer Festival, among the biggest ribfests in North America; and the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival on the Lake Huron shore.
When is festival season in Southwestern Ontario?
The Stratford Festival’s theatre season runs from April into the fall, while summer — roughly June through early September — is peak time for outdoor music, ribfests and food festivals. Fall brings harvest events and fall fairs like London’s Western Fair.
Are there free festivals in the region?
Yes, several big ones. Sunfest and the Home County Music & Art Festival in London are free, as are the Windsor International Busker Festival and Carrousel of the Nations. Many town street festivals and the Leamington Tomato Festival are free to attend as well.
Is Stratford only about theatre?
The Stratford Festival is the anchor and a world-class draw, but the town also hosts a garlic festival, a blues and ribfest, and a strong culinary scene. Across the wider region you’ll find everything from Celtic music to classic-car shows and tomato festivals.
Can I get around without a car?
VIA Rail reaches London, Stratford, Windsor and several towns along the corridor, and GO Transit serves London. But the lakeshore destinations — Goderich, Bayfield, Port Stanley, Leamington and Kingsville — are much easier to explore with a car.
