✨ Why This Festival Is Worth the Drive
Since 1989, Cinéfest Sudbury has quietly built a reputation as one of the more distinctive film festivals in the country — not because it chases scale, but because it’s genuinely community-rooted. Billed as “The People’s Festival,” it fills SilverCity Sudbury for nine straight days with Canadian and international premieres, while threading the whole event together with nightly Gala screenings that turn into proper Sudbury social occasions: red carpets, receptions, and a rotating cast of local venues from Science North to Cambrian College.
The 38th edition brings something genuinely new: Desjardins After Dark, a program built around edgier genre films in the spirit of TIFF’s Midnight Madness. It’s a smart addition for a festival built on the theme “For thinkers and feelers” — expanding the emotional range of the lineup without losing what’s made Cinéfest work for nearly four decades.
What makes it worth the trip if you’re not local is the sheer density of programming packed into a walkable, single-venue footprint. Nine Gala nights, a full slate of features and shorts, and the CTV Best in Shorts competition spotlighting amateur Northern Ontario filmmakers — all under one roof at SilverCity, with a different après-film party every night giving you a genuine reason to linger in Sudbury rather than just catching a screening and leaving.

🚗 Getting There & Parking
SilverCity Sudbury sits on Barry Downe Road in Greater Sudbury, with free on-site parking typical of a standard Cineplex multiplex location.
Après-film receptions: Reception venues change nightly and are spread across Sudbury — Science North, local restaurants along Kingsway, Cambrian College, and the Hilton Garden Inn. Plan transportation between the theatre and each night’s reception venue in advance.
Multi-day visits: If you’re travelling from outside Sudbury for several days of the festival, the Hilton Garden Inn Sudbury (also the Closing Gala reception venue) is a convenient, festival-sponsored option to consider.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
🎟️ Decide between a Passport and general admission early. If you’re planning to catch more than a handful of films, the Passport pays for itself quickly and adds Gala and reception access you’d otherwise pay for separately.
📅 Download the film schedule PDF. With nine days of programming, the official downloadable schedule is easier to plan around than browsing the site screening by screening.
🚗 Plan reception transportation in advance. Each night’s après-film party is at a different venue across the city — knowing where you’re headed after the credits roll saves scrambling in the theatre lobby.
🌙 Try Desjardins After Dark if you want something different. It’s a new addition built for genre-film fans who want a break from the Gala prestige-drama pace.
