🎶 Live local music
⛺ On-site camping
👨👩👧 Kids’ programs
💡 This is a biannual tradition — the same festival returns in spring (May). Both weekends book up fast, especially the clinic slots.
✨ Why Palmer River Festival Is a Paddler’s Pilgrimage
The Palmer River Festival has earned its reputation as one of Ontario’s best-loved paddling weekends. It returns twice a year — spring and fall — because once is never enough. The Madawaska River is beautiful, the instruction is world-class, the community is welcoming, and the whole thing is built on the principle that paddling should be accessible to everyone, beginner to expert.
What makes it special isn’t just the clinics. Yes, you can refine your kayak roll with certified instructors, learn to handle tandem canoe in whitewater, or challenge yourself with advanced class III runs. But the festival is really about the weekend. You camp on the river, listen to live local music Saturday night, eat from food vendors, meet paddlers from across the region, and come away with new skills and new friends in equal measure.
Whether you’re brand new to paddling and ready to dip a blade, a seasoned kayaker looking to sharpen your skills, or just here for the music and the river atmosphere, the Palmer River Festival is built for you. That’s why it keeps selling out.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing
🧥 Bring layers and rain gear. Mid-September weather in the Ottawa Valley is beautiful but unpredictable. River spray, cool mornings, and afternoon showers are all possible.
💸 Bring cash for food and vendors. Most on-site food vendors are cash-preferred. Bring enough for meals you aren’t including in your package.
🛟 Non-paddlers are welcome. You don’t need to be in a clinic to enjoy the festival. Music, food, camping, and paddler community vibes are accessible to anyone.
🏕️ Camping is tent-only and tight. Space is limited and fills quickly, especially for a fall weekend. Book early if you want to stay on-site.
🗓️ The spring edition is just as good. If fall is sold out, the festival returns in May. Both are legendary in the paddling community.
