The Neyaashiinigmiing Annual Traditional Powwow is one of Ontario’s longest-running Indigenous cultural celebrations. For forty years, it’s been held on the third weekend of August at Cape Croker Park, a sacred space on the unceded lands of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation in the Bruce Peninsula.

This isn’t a tourism show — it’s a gathering for the community and visitors alike to witness and participate in the living traditions of Anishinaabe culture. You’ll see dancers in full regalia competing in various styles, hear the heartbeat of traditional drums, learn about the significance of what you’re witnessing, and support Indigenous artisans and food vendors directly.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning guest, the powwow welcomes you to come with respect, an open mind, and a willingness to learn. There’s a dedicated teaching tent for newcomers each morning, and the organizers have thoughtfully created an etiquette guide so you can honor the traditions you’re witnessing.

The powwow runs gates open from 10:00 AM daily, with traditional drumming, dancing competitions, and vendor areas throughout each day. A teaching tent for first-time visitors runs 10:30 AM–11:00 AM on each day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

A central part of the powwow experience is supporting Indigenous artisans and food vendors. You’ll find handmade crafts, clothing, jewelry, beadwork, and traditional foods prepared on-site. When you buy from these vendors, you’re directly supporting Indigenous families and communities.

💵 Bring cash. Many vendors operate on cash only or prefer small bills. Bringing cash helps vendors tremendously and is appreciated across the powwow grounds.

🚗 Getting There & Parking

Cape Croker Park is located in Wiarton, in the heart of the Bruce Peninsula, about 2.5 hours northwest of Toronto and 2 hours from Ottawa. The park sits on the traditional territory of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.

By Car: The park is accessed via Highway 6 from either direction. GPS and maps will direct you to 112 Park Rd, Wiarton. Ample parking is available on the grounds and nearby.

Camping on Site: Stay at Cape Croker Park’s campground, just steps from the powwow grounds. Tent, RV, and overflow camping all available. Book well in advance — August weekends fill quickly.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

📸 Photography etiquette matters. Do not photograph dancers during honour songs, memorial specials, or prayers. Always ask vendors and artists for permission before taking photos. Show respect for the sacred moments.

👕 Respect regalia. Dancers wear regalia, not costumes. Each piece has deep cultural and personal significance. Appreciate it as part of their identity and heritage.

🥁 Listen to the drums. The drum is the heartbeat of the powwow. Show respect by standing and listening during opening and closing songs, and during any special recognitions or memorial dances.

⛳ Pack a chair or blanket. The grounds have open seating areas, but bringing your own chair or blanket ensures comfort throughout the day. Get there early for the best viewing spots, especially on Saturday.

💧 Bring water and sunscreen. August weather in the Bruce Peninsula can be warm and sunny. A refillable water bottle and sunscreen are must-haves for a comfortable day outdoors.
