Every June, something wonderfully chaotic takes over downtown Ottawa. Over 62 theatre companies descend on Arts Court, La Nouvelle Scène, and a handful of other stages for the 29th Ottawa Fringe Festival, running June 18–28, 2026. Stand-up comedy. Clown shows. Gothic horror. Musical theatre. A bilingual one-person show about a cat with nine lives. Immersive magic. A queer goose play. And that’s just scratching the surface.

The Fringe operates on a beautifully simple principle: artists enter via lottery, the festival is completely uncensored, and 100% of ticket revenue goes directly to the performers. No gatekeepers, no filter. Which means you might stumble into the best show you’ve ever seen — or the weirdest. Either way, it’s only $14 a ticket, and you’ll have a story to tell.

💡 You’ll need a $5 Fringe Pin to attend any show — it’s a one-time purchase for the whole festival. Individual tickets are $14. Multi-show passes (5 for $65, 10 for $120) are available in person at box offices during the festival.

✨ Why Ottawa Fringe Is Unlike Any Other Festival

The thing that makes a Fringe festival different from every other theatre festival is the lottery. Anyone can apply. Anyone can get in. The festival doesn’t pick the shows based on quality, reputation, or commercial appeal — it selects them randomly, and then gets out of the way. That policy produces a program that no artistic director could curate: genuinely unpredictable, thrillingly diverse, and occasionally jaw-dropping.

Ottawa’s Fringe has been running for nearly three decades, which means it’s had a long time to build the infrastructure around that scrappy spirit. The venues are close together, the box office is easy to navigate, the Fringe Courtyard gives you somewhere to decompress between shows with a drink and some food, and the prices are low enough that you can take a gamble on something weird at 9 pm on a Tuesday.

And the artist-first model is genuinely meaningful. When you buy a $14 ticket, all of that money goes to the company on stage. You’re not funding a venue, a producer, or a festival overhead. You’re paying the artists directly. That’s a rare and good thing.

📍 The Venues — All Within Walking Distance

One of the great things about Ottawa Fringe is how compact the whole thing is. All the main venues are clustered in the Sandy Hill / downtown core, and you can walk between most of them in under 10 minutes. No car needed.

🎫 Tickets, Pins & Passes

Fringe ticketing is simple once you know the system. There are really only two things to remember: get your Fringe Pin, and then buy your show tickets.

🔔 No refunds, no exchanges, no exceptions — this is standard at all Fringe festivals. Once you’ve bought a ticket, it’s yours. Latecomers are allowed but must already have their ticket; you’ll be let in at the seven-minute mark as a group.

🇷 The Fringe Courtyard & Community Series

The shows are the main event, but the Fringe Courtyard is what makes the whole thing feel like a festival rather than just a series of theatre performances. Located at 67 Nicholas Street (Club SAW), this is where you grab a drink, argue about which show was better, and stumble into a free community performance you didn’t know you needed.

The Community Series runs alongside the main festival and is curated by Associate Artistic Director Emma Ferrante to uplift underrepresented voices and foster local collaboration. These events are free — no pin or ticket required — and include performances, community gatherings, and special programming designed to make Fringe genuinely accessible to everyone in the city.

The courtyard also has food vendors, daily Happy Hours, and an outdoor bar operated by Club SAW. It’s the kind of place where you come for one drink between shows and end up staying until midnight. There’s also a bar at La Nouvelle Scène for those catching shows over there.

💡 Things Worth Knowing Before Your First Show

👑 Get your Fringe Pin first. You can buy it online when you purchase tickets, or at any box office. You’ll need it for every show, every day. Don’t show up to your first performance without one — you won’t be let in.

⏰ Doors open one hour before the first performance of the day. Box offices open an hour before the first show each day at all venues. Arrive with a bit of time to spare, especially for popular shows that might sell out.

📂 Consider a pass if you’re planning to see more than 4 shows. The 5-show pass ($65) and 10-show pass ($120) save you money and let you decide at the last minute what to see. Passes are in-person only at box offices during the festival.

📞 Check the audience rating before you go. Artists self-rate their shows G, PG, 14+, or Mature. Fringe is completely uncensored, so a Mature-rated show can contain anything. Check the rating on each show page and choose accordingly, especially if bringing younger audience members.

🚗 Free parking tip. After 6 pm and on weekends, there’s free underground parking at Ottawa City Hall — under a 10-minute walk from the main venues. Paid parking is available at the Rideau Centre, Les Suites Hotel, uOttawa, and La Nouvelle Scène.

📨 Half-price tickets are revealed day-of. Follow @ottawafringe on social media or visit the Fringe Courtyard box office each day to find out which shows have half-price rush tickets available. Great way to take a chance on something unexpected.

♿️ Accessibility options are built into the program. Shows are tagged with accessibility features including open captioned performances, audio described performances, ASL interpretation, assistive listening, relaxed performances, and more. Filter by these on the shows page when buying tickets.

🏆 Best of Fest closes the festival on June 28. On closing night, the most popular show from each venue gets one final encore performance. If you can only make it to one Fringe event and want to maximize your chances of seeing something brilliant, Best of Fest night is the one to go to.
