Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival 2026
Thirty-eight years ago, 27 scrappy teams lined up on the water at Centre Island and kicked off what would become one of North America’s most beloved dragon boat events. The Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival — organized by the Toronto Chinese Business Association in partnership with GWN Dragon Boat — is back on June 13 & 14, 2026, bringing hundreds of teams, thousands of paddlers, and a full weekend of racing, culture, music, and waterfront energy to the Toronto Islands.
This year the festival holds official Dragon Boat Canada Race Series status — meaning competitive club crews earn DBC Championship eligibility and leaderboard points here. Whether you’re racing, cheering from the shore, or just discovering what dragon boating is all about, Centre Island on a June weekend doesn’t get much better than this.

✨ Why the Toronto Dragon Boat Festival Is Worth Your Weekend
There’s a reason this festival has been running for 38 years. Dragon boat racing is one of those sports where you don’t need to know anything about it to be completely riveted by it — the drumbeats, the coordinated paddle strokes, the spray off the water, the roar when a crew crosses the finish line. As a spectator, it grabs you fast.
Add the fact that it’s all happening on Centre Island with the Toronto skyline as a backdrop, and you’ve got one of the most visually spectacular sporting event settings in the city. The race course sits on the lagoon between the island and the mainland, meaning you can watch boats come straight at you from the shoreline — there’s nothing quite like it.
The festival began in 1989 with 27 teams and has grown into a continental-level competition that draws crews from across North America. In 2026 it carries official Dragon Boat Canada Race Series status — so the racing is serious, the competition is fierce, and the athletes showing up are genuinely excellent. But the atmosphere stays accessible and celebratory. This is a festival as much as a race meet.
Beyond the racing, there’s live entertainment, authentic Chinese cultural performances, food vendors, a Cultural Expo, and the always-buzzing Athletes’ Village. Plan to make a full day of it — or both days.

💡 Tips for Racers & Spectators
⛴ Take one of the first three ferries. The official recommendation — it sets you up with time to check in, find your team site, and get oriented before racing starts. The ferry queue gets longer as the morning progresses.
📋 Complete your waivers by June 10. The electronic waiver deadline is 11:59 PM on Wednesday June 10. After that, only paper copies are accepted on Saturday morning at check-in — a slower process. Don’t leave it.
📱 Watch the live results. gwnresults.com gives you real-time race results and progressions from your phone, so you always know what’s happening on the water even when you’re away from the course.
🌞 Dress for the elements. Centre Island is fully exposed — sun, wind, and occasional spray are all part of the deal. Sunscreen, layers, and a hat are all smart calls regardless of the forecast.
💧 Bring a reusable water bottle. Bottled water is banned in Toronto Island parks. There are no exceptions. Come prepared with a bottle you can refill.
🏆 Stay for Finals on Sunday. The Grand Finals are where the real drama happens. Watching top crews go head-to-head in a 500m final — with the drumbeat echoing across the water — is something genuinely worth staying around for.
🏈 Book the Pirate Taxi early. If you’re a participant going for the $12 rate, priority boarding requires a reserved departure time. Book ahead at piratetaxi.ca — spots fill up fast on race morning.
