Barrie Waterfront Festival

If you’re anywhere near Barrie this long weekend, this is the easy yes. Three days, eleven tribute bands, a beer garden, food trucks, a full midway and 50+ vendors — all of it free to walk into, right on Kempenfelt Bay.

The lineup leans gloriously into tribute acts: Monkey Wrench (Foo Fighters) headlines Friday, AC/DC Canada takes Saturday night, and a full-throated Queen tribute (Sheer Heart Attack) closes things out Sunday at 5:30pm. In between you get The Hip Experience, a Springsteen tribute, Neil Young, Ozzy and more. Admission is free; midway rides, food and drinks are pay-as-you-go.

Carassauga Festival of Cultures

Main hub: Paramount Fine Foods Centre, 5500 Rose Cherry Place · 9 venues

Canada’s largest multicultural festival is basically a passport to 20+ countries in a single weekend without leaving Mississauga. Twenty-one pavilions — from the Philippines to Portugal, Ukraine to Hawaii — each hosted by the actual community it represents, with real food, live dance and genuine hospitality.

Free shuttle buses (and free MiWay transit with your passport) connect all nine venues. Advance passports are $10 online, $15 at the gate, and kids 12 and under are free with a passport-holding adult. Saturday runs noon to 11pm; Sunday noon to 7pm. Don’t skip the $2 “Toonie Taste” samples.

160+ buildings & sites across the city · 10am–5pm both days

For one weekend, Toronto hands over the keys to itself. Bank vaults, ghost subway stations, century-old courthouses, working sugar factories, the inside of City Hall — over 160 spaces open up, all free, no strings. This year’s theme is The World in a City, leaning into Toronto’s multicultural fabric ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Standouts worth planning a route around: a rare wander through the now-vacant Old City Hall, the “ghost” Lower Bay subway station, the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatres, and free entry to the Aga Khan Museum. Most sites are walk-in, but the 14 free neighbourhood walking tours fill up — book those ahead.

Canada’s premier a cappella festival is mid-run this weekend, and there’s plenty landing right on these dates. Friday May 22 brings Countermeasure: One More Spin at Paradise Theatre — the farewell concert from one of Canada’s most beloved a cappella groups.

Saturday May 23 is the big one: the Canadian A Cappella Championships at Koerner Hall (7pm), sixteen groups across four divisions. And Sunday May 24 has the family-favourite Aca-Singalong with Deke Sharon at the ROM (1pm) plus Pass the Mic Night that evening.

🎹 Guelph 📅 Opens Fri, May 22 🏆 20th Anniversary

Guelph Musicfest — Season 20

Guelph Youth Music Centre, 75 Cardigan Street · concerts at 7:30pm

A beautifully kept secret for chamber music lovers in southwestern Ontario. The anniversary season opens Friday May 22 with Schmaltz & Pepper, a genre-bending Klezmer-jazz-classical ensemble featuring the TSO’s principal clarinet — the most accessible night of the whole season if you’re new to chamber music.

If you can’t make it in person, every live ticket includes a 7-day HD video replay, or there’s an online-only series for $75 that covers the whole household. The season continues with Stewart Goodyear’s Goldberg Variations, the Gryphon Trio and the Penderecki Quartet through June 19.

Stratford Festival

Four venues across Stratford · about 2 hours from Toronto

One of Canada’s signature theatre experiences is in full swing. The 2026 season spans 12 productions across four venues — Shakespeare, musicals, modern classics, family programming and a world première — including The Tempest, Guys and Dolls, Something Rotten!, Waiting for Godot, Death of a Salesman, The Hobbit and Othello.

It makes for a perfect long-weekend day trip or overnight: pair a show with riverside walks, gardens and downtown dining. The Stratford Direct Bus runs return service from Toronto, and VIA Rail serves the town too, so you don’t even need to drive.

Shaw Festival

Three theatres in Niagara-on-the-Lake · new opening this weekend

World-class theatre in one of Ontario’s prettiest towns. The 2026 season runs through December with ten productions across three venues, spanning musicals, mysteries, comedy and classic drama — including Funny Girl, Amadeus, Sleuth and Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense.

Nicely timed for this weekend: The Wind in the Willows opens at the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre on May 22, a great family pick. Make a getaway of it with Niagara-on-the-Lake’s wineries, dining and heritage streets — the Shaw Express bus runs from Toronto and Burlington.

Galleries & public spaces city-wide across Toronto

All month long, Toronto turns into a city-wide gallery. One of the largest photography festivals in the world, CONTACT spreads exhibitions and public installations across galleries, museums, billboards, transit shelters and storefronts — so you stumble into striking work just walking down the street.

It’s a low-pressure, flexible add-on to any other plans this weekend — many exhibitions are free, and you can take it in casually between other stops. Use the official exhibition map to plan a downtown loop on foot or by TTC.

Canada’s Wonderland Festival of Music

Canada’s Wonderland, 1 Canada’s Wonderland Drive, Vaughan

A bit different from the others — this is a school and community music event that runs on select dates across late spring, with several landing this weekend (May 21, 22, 25 among them). Bands and choirs perform in a professional-style setting, receive professional adjudication, then spend the rest of the day in the park.

It’s an adjudication rather than a competition, so the tone is encouraging and educational. Open to elementary, middle and senior high school instrumental and choral groups plus community bands and choirs. If you’ve got a music group, it’s a genuine highlight of the year.
