Tucked into the Almaguin Highlands about halfway between Huntsville and South River, the little village of Sprucedale puts on one of the most genuinely fun small-town weekends in cottage country — and 2026 is the biggest year yet. SummerFest is expanding to two full days, July 24 and 25, with a Friday night concert added to the lineup alongside Saturday’s main event.

And yes, the lawn tractor races are back. Real people, real (loud) tractors, real racing — plus a vendor market, outdoor beer garden, a fire department open house, food trucks, a splash zone, kids’ power wheel races, and the chance to throw a pie at a member of council. It’s a community festival in the best old-fashioned sense.

✨ Why Sprucedale SummerFest Is Worth the Drive

Sprucedale is the kind of place where the post office, the gas station, and the community centre are pretty much the whole downtown — and that’s exactly the point. SummerFest isn’t corporate, isn’t polished, and isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is: a township coming together to put on a really good weekend.

The lawn tractor races are the obvious draw — this is the 5th Annual running of them, and they’ve become a bit of a regional cult event. Modified mowers, surprisingly serious speed, and the kind of crowd that cheers just as hard for the underdog that finishes last as the one that wins. Add the kids’ power wheel races back this year and you’ve got something that genuinely works for every age in the family.

Beyond the racing, the rest of the day is laid out for hanging around: South River Brewing pours in the beer garden, MMCAP BBQ and Yetti’s Pizza handle the food, the firefighters open up the hall, and there’s a vendor market full of local makers. The pulled pork dinner alone is worth showing up for.

The lawn tractor races are open to anyone with a tractor that meets the class rules. You don’t need to be a pro — plenty of first-timers run every year — but you do need to register before the deadline and review the class rules so your machine qualifies.

The vendor market is one of the quieter highlights of SummerFest — a real cross-section of Almaguin Highlands artisans, food producers, and small businesses. If you make things and want to set up a booth, the township welcomes applications.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

💵 Bring cash. Sprucedale is small and connectivity can be patchy. Vendors, food trucks, and the beer garden often run cash-only or cash-preferred.

🌞 Sun & shade prep. A lot of the festival is outdoors with limited natural shade near the track. Sunscreen, hats, and a folding chair will earn their keep.

🚗 Driving in. Sprucedale is on Highway 518, about 25 minutes east of Highway 11 (South River exit) and roughly an hour north of Huntsville. Parking at the community centre is free.

👪 Coming with kids? Plan around the splash zone and the power wheel races — those tend to be the highlights for younger ones. The fire department open house is also a winner.

💯 Stay for the pulled pork dinner. It’s a SummerFest tradition and one of the few things that consistently sells out. Eat before you race, not after.

SummerFest is run by the McMurrich Monteith Recreation Committee and powered by community volunteers. Proceeds from the pulled pork dinner and the “pie a councillor” fundraiser go directly into the local playground and future rec events. Showing up, eating, drinking, and throwing a pie all count as support.
