The TRCA Butterfly Festival celebrates one of nature’s most remarkable journeys. Every August, Monarch butterflies begin their extraordinary 4,000 km migration from Canada to Mexico — and Tommy Thompson Park is one of the critical roosting spots where they gather, refuel, and prepare for the trip of their lifetimes.
Located on Toronto’s waterfront at the convergence of two major migratory flyways, Tommy Thompson Park hosts over 50 butterfly and moth species throughout the year. On festival day, TRCA experts guide you through guided walks, answer your questions, and help you understand the urgent conservation challenges facing these iconic insects as they navigate a changing planet.
This is a FREE, family-friendly celebration of nature at Toronto’s largest greenspace. Expect pristine trails, expansive views of the city skyline, genuine environmental education, and the chance to witness one of the most beautiful insects in North America in their natural habitat during one of the most critical times of their life cycle.
🎯 Festival Activities
A variety of activities are offered for people of all ages throughout the festival day (10 AM–3 PM). Come for one activity or stay for several.
Guided Walks
Expert-led butterfly walks through Tommy Thompson Park’s trails. Learn to identify species, spot migration patterns, and understand local ecosystems.
Kids Activities
Kid-friendly games, nature crafts, and activities designed to engage young explorers in learning about butterflies and conservation.
Nature Kits
Borrow Nature Exploration Kits at the Nature Centre (first-come, first-served). Includes binoculars, field guides, and observation tools.
Outreach Booths
Meet TRCA and conservation educators at community booths. Learn about pollinator conservation and the Monarch Teacher’s Network of Canada.
🚌 Shuttle service available: An event shuttle runs between the Main Entrance and Pedestrian Bridge (10 AM–3 PM). No fixed schedule — hail it at any point along the route.
🦋 The Monarch Migration Story
The Monarch butterfly migration is one of the most extraordinary journeys in the natural world. Between August and November, millions of Monarchs travel an incredible 4,000 kilometres from Canada to the mountainous forests of Mexico — a journey that takes a single butterfly generation and is guided purely by instinct and environmental cues.
Tommy Thompson Park, located at the convergence of two major North American migratory flyways, is a critical stopover site. Monarchs arrive from across Ontario and the Great Lakes region to rest, feed on milkweed plants, and gather their strength before beginning the long flight south. The park’s position on the Toronto waterfront makes it a vital ecological link in this continental-scale migration.
However, the Monarch migration faces serious threats: habitat loss, climate change, pesticide use, and other human impacts. Conservation efforts like this festival — and organizations like the Monarch Teacher’s Network of Canada — work to protect milkweed plants, reduce pesticide use, and educate the public about why these butterflies matter to all of us.

🚗 Getting There & Parking
Tommy Thompson Park is easily accessible from downtown Toronto. It’s located on the Toronto waterfront at Leslie Street, just east of the Don Valley Parkway.
By car: Free gravel parking available at the Main Entrance (1 Leslie St). Saturdays can be busy, so arrive early. The park road is approximately 1 km long and opens into a large parking area.
By transit: Accessible via the TTC. Check the TTC trip planner or Google Maps for current routes and schedules to Tommy Thompson Park.
On foot or bike: The park is a popular destination for cycling and walking from adjacent Toronto neighbourhoods. Bike parking available.

☀️ Bring sun protection and comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking on trails — wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable hiking or walking shoes. August weather in Toronto can be warm.
📷 Bring binoculars and a camera. Tommy Thompson Park is a photographer’s and birdwatcher’s paradise. Binoculars help you spot butterflies and other wildlife up close.
💧 Bring water and snacks. There are no food vendors at the festival. Pack water, snacks, and any medications you might need for a full day of outdoor exploration.
