✨ Why Blockobana Is a Toronto Summer Institution

Blockobana is the sibling event to Blockorama, both presented by Blackness Yes! — the collective that has carved out space for Black queer and trans community in Toronto for decades. The first Blockobana took place in 2010, and since 2018 it’s served as the closing party of Toronto Black Pride weekend.

It’s a day-long music and arts festival where 2SLGBTQ+ African, Black and Caribbean folks celebrate their culture on their own terms. The soundtrack runs from soca and dancehall to Afrobeats, R&B and hip hop, spun and performed by some of the best DJs and artists in the GTA, from midday right through to 11 PM.

Around the music you’ll find food vendors and a marketplace, and bars on-site to keep the day going. This year the party moves to Barbara Hall Park — a fitting home, right in the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village and next door to The 519.

Blockobana runs as one continuous day of programming rather than a fixed set-time grid. Here’s the shape of it:

🏳️‍🌈 A Safe Space, By Design

Blockobana exists as a safe space for intergenerational African, Black and Caribbean 2SLGBTQ+ artists and community members to celebrate together. It is explicitly not a space for homophobia, transphobia or anti-Black racism — and, in the organizers’ words, please leave badmind at home.

Allies, friends and family are welcome in support of the community. Come ready to celebrate, look out for one another, and keep the space joyful and affirming for everyone in it.

🚗 Getting There

Barbara Hall Park sits on Church Street between Wellesley and Maitland, in Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village — one of the most transit-friendly corners of the city.

By TTC: Wellesley Station (Line 1) is a short walk east, and the park is a few minutes from the College and Bloor-Yonge stations too. Streetcars on Carlton/College are also close by.

Driving: Downtown street parking is limited and metered — transit or rideshare is the easier option for a long day out. If you do drive, look for Green P lots in the surrounding blocks.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

📝 Register ahead. It’s free, but signing up on Eventbrite means you’ll get location and lineup updates — and it helps the organizers plan.

🚫 No outside drinks. Blockobana isn’t BYOB — grab from the on-site bars, and know that every round helps fund next year’s event.

☀️ Pace yourself for a long day. It runs noon to 11 PM outdoors — sunscreen and water early, a layer for when the sun goes down.

🚇 Take transit. The park is steps from Wellesley Station, and parking in the Village is tight — the TTC is the low-stress way in and out.
