MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival 2026

Every June, Toronto’s book world develops a taste for the criminal. MOTIVE, the crime and mystery festival from the Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA), returns June 5–7, 2026 for a milestone fifth year — and it’s the biggest one yet.

Set on the leafy Victoria University campus at the University of Toronto, the 2026 edition packs in more than 55 events: author conversations, panel discussions, creative-writing masterclasses, real forensic-science workshops, true-crime walking tours, morning yoga for crime lovers, a board games lounge, and a murder mystery dinner. Whether you read thrillers, write them, or just love a good whodunit, this is your weekend.

✨ Why MOTIVE Is a Cut Above

Plenty of literary events put an author on a stage and call it a night. MOTIVE treats crime fiction as the rich, sprawling world it actually is. Over one weekend you can move from a psychological-thriller masterclass to a real University of Toronto forensic-anthropology workshop, to a walking tour of Toronto’s grisly Victorian history, to a glass of wine at a murder mystery dinner. It’s a festival built for genuine fans, not just a book tour with extra chairs.

It’s also genuinely international. The 2026 line-up brings together leading voices from France, Iceland, Korea, the UK and across Canada, with dedicated “Crime Scene” panels spotlighting France and Korea. You get a sense of how the genre is written and read in very different places — all in one campus quad.

And in its fifth year, MOTIVE has hit its stride. With 55-plus events across three days, the hard part isn’t finding something to do — it’s choosing.
