Open Tuning 2026 — Toronto’s Free DIY Music Festival
Once a year, a quiet pocket of downtown Toronto turns into one big, sprawling, wonderfully un-slick concert. On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the porches, garages, laneways and street corners of Seaton Village fill up with live music — and every last note of it is free.
Now in its 11th year, Open Tuning is a grassroots, all-volunteer festival inspired by Paris’s Fête de la Musique. Musicians of every age, genre and experience level — first-timers, some-timers, lifers, and the occasional touring pro — sign themselves up and play. You just wander the neighbourhood and follow the sound.

Most festivals herd you toward a stage. Open Tuning does the opposite — it scatters the music across an entire neighbourhood and lets you go find it. You might turn a corner and stumble onto a teenager playing their first-ever gig on a front porch, then wander half a block and catch a seasoned band tearing it up in a garage.
It started back in 2013, when a handful of Seaton Village residents decided their alleyways and porches deserved live music. More than a decade later it’s a genuine Toronto institution — recent years have seen well over 100 acts across dozens of community stages, with the occasional surprise appearance from members of acts like Broken Social Scene.
The charm is in how unpolished and human it all is. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and it treats a nervous first-timer with the same warmth as a touring pro. If you want a low-key, genuinely joyful day out in the city, this is it.
🎤 How Open Tuning Actually Works
If you’ve never been, the format can sound a little chaotic — in the best way. Here’s the gist:
🏠 Neighbours host the stages
Locals offer up their porch, yard, garage or laneway as a venue and line up the music. Businesses pitch in too.
🎤 Musicians self-register
Anyone can sign up to play — all ages, all genres, all experience levels. No audition, no gatekeeping.
🗺 You grab a map & wander
On festival day, pick up a schedule and map, then roam the neighbourhood and catch whatever pulls you in.

Open Tuning traditionally launches with a community parade through Seaton Village to a central park stage. It’s a fun, family-friendly way to start — follow the crowd, grab a festival map, and you’re off.

This is the heart of it. Dozens of small stages run short sets throughout the afternoon. Wander Bloor-to-Dupont, Bathurst-to-Christie, and let the schedule (or your ears) guide you from one to the next.

As the afternoon rolls into evening, the energy shifts — later sets, bigger crowds gathered on lawns, and that warm summer-night-in-the-city feeling. A perfect way to close out the day.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
🗺 Grab the map first. With music spread across the whole neighbourhood, a quick look at the schedule helps you plan a loop — or just embrace the wandering.
👟 Wear comfy shoes. You’ll be on your feet and on the move between stages all day. This is a walking festival.
💰 Bring a little cash. It’s free, but tossing a few dollars to performers or the festival donation jar keeps this community gem alive.
👶 Great with kids. Outdoor, relaxed, and full of variety — little ones can dance freely and you’re never far from a break or a snack stop.

Seaton Village sits in central Toronto, bounded by Bloor, Dupont, Bathurst and Christie — and it’s very transit-friendly. Honestly, leave the car at home if you can.
