If you’ve never done a ribfest before, the concept is gloriously simple: a handful of travelling BBQ pitmasters — the “ribbers” — set up their smokers in one spot, and you wander between them sampling racks, pulled pork, brisket, and whatever sticky-sauced creation each one is known for. Then you vote for your favourite.

The Thornhill stop is one leg of the Northern Heat Rib Series, which tours ribfests across Ontario through the summer. What makes this one easy to recommend is the setting — it’s right at Promenade Mall, with free parking and transit access, so there’s no fuss getting in and out.

Wash it all down at the Beer Market, presented by Budweiser, with an ice-cold selection of Labatt products on tap. There’s also Pelee Island wine, plus ready-to-drink Mike’s Hard coolers, Canadian Club mixers, and Black Fly frozen beverages — you won’t leave thirsty.

Pick up drink tickets at the ticket tent near the bar, which opens daily when the event opens. Last call for purchases is one hour before closing, and the bar itself stops serving 30 minutes before close.
